PROVINCIAL TOWNS LEAGUE
This League begins in September and ends before March each season.
There are four Divisions in the League. Breifne is in Division 2 for the 2007/2008 season.
Presently, there are four teams in each Division. There are four age groups in each team.
In the coming season 2007/2008 the age groups are as follows:
Group A - 1997/Younger; Group B - 1996/1995;
Group C - 1994/1993; Group D - 1992/Older.
Points are awarded for each event and subsequently points are also awarded for the overall
result of each gala. A team is promoted and a team is relegated, where appropriate, in each
Division at the end of each season. Awards, in respect of the League results, are presented
after an end of season gala, for which there are time trials. Breifne won Group A for the
2006/2007 season.
Individual events are 50 metres of all 4 strokes and 100 metres Individual Medley for boys
and girls. There are boys and girls medley and frontcrawl relay events. Group A Relays are
4 x 25M and Groups B, C & D are 4 X 50M. The swimming order of each gala is Medley Relay,
Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly, Frontcrawl, Individual Medley and Freestyle Relay.
Swimmers may only swim in an older age group in relay events.
Home teams swim in Lanes 2,4 & 6 and away teams in Lanes 1, 3 & 5.
Swimmers must be registered Competitive with Swim Ireland to compete in this League.
Breifne is required to swim this League in a pool where diving is permitted.
The fixtures for the season and rules governing the League are set down by the Provincial
Towns Swimming Association. In alternate years fixtures are organised on a home and away
basis. The rules for the League are reviewed each season.
Each Club is required to provide officials for the galas and the home club must organise
the gala and provide refreshments.
A different team can be selected for each gala using current recorded best times.
BELFAST TELEGRAPH TELETOTS LEAGUE
The Belfast Telegraph Teletots League is swum under Swim Ireland rules in addition to the
rules for the League, which are reviewed each season. Each swimmer in the League must be
registered Competitive with Swim Ireland.
There are three Sections in this League. Breifne swims in Section A for the 2007/2008 season.
Points are awarded for each event and subsequently points are also awarded for the overall
result of each gala. Presently, there are seven teams in Sections A & B and eight teams in
Section C. At the end of the each season, there are finals to establish which Club will be
promoted to a higher Section, as appropriate. There are two finals in each division, the
top three clubs and the bottom three clubs. The 7th Club in Sections A & B are relegated.
There are four age groups on each team. The age groups for the 2007/2008 season are as follows:
A - 1999/Younger; B - 1998; C - 1997; D - 1996.
The running order of each gala is: Medley Relay; Backcrawl; Breaststroke; Butterfly; Frontcrawl and Freestyle Relay.
In this League swimmers may swim up in any older age group in individual and relay events.
All races are 25metres. Relay teams are made up of two boys and two girls.
It is the responsibility of each club to arrange fixtures. There are generally an even
number of home and away galas set down by the League Secretary.
Each Club is required to provide officials for the galas and the home club must organise
the gala and provide refreshments.
Teams are selected for each gala taking into consideration best recorded times from
Internal galas and open competitions.
INTERNAL CLUB GALAS
There are generally three Internal Club Galas held throughout the season. Internal galas
are foremost held to encourage novice swimmers in the Club to compete in a safe environment.
It would be hoped that the swimmers would be encouraged to progress to compete in open
competition at a more challenging level. Internal galas are used as time trials and
the results are taken into account when selecting any League team. At the 2006 Annual
General Meeting, a new format for awards in respect of these galas, was decided.
Certificates, showing the times swum in each gala, will be presented at a special gathering
to all participants in any of the Internal galas.
Swimmers eligible for the Teletots League swim 25 metres of each stroke and older swimmers
swim 50 metres of each stroke.
GALA RESULTS
All official results are recorded on the club's Hy-tek computer system. A full
profile of a swimmer's results from all Open galas is available on request from the
competition secretary.
